His service records trace his movements from ship to ship and so I began looking for clues. On his cap I could just make out the letters \u201cOPA\u201d, which immediately suggested <strong><em>HMS Topaze<\/em><\/strong>, the vessel he served on between <strong>18th February 1866<\/strong> and <strong>1st September 1869<\/strong><strong>. <\/strong><em>HMS<\/em> <em>Topaze<\/em> was a wooden screw frigate, a sailing warship fitted with a steam engine. As a stoker, John would have worked deep in the ship\u2019s engine room, shovelling coal into the boilers to keep the engines running whenever steam power was needed.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Another clue came from the <strong>backstamp on the photograph<\/strong>: <em>\u201cC. Baldwin y Ca., Fot\u00f3grafos, Calle de San Juan de Dios N\u00ba95, Valpara\u00edso\u201d.<\/em> This imprint matches the documented marks used by the Baldwin studio in <strong>Valpara\u00edso<\/strong> during the 1860s, placing the photograph firmly within the period when <em>Topaze<\/em> was stationed there.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_4168\" style=\"width: 460px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4168\" class=\"wp-image-4168 size-full\" title=\"Backstamp on the reverse of the photograph\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hibbittbarnes.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/John-Hellyer-Reverse.jpg\" alt=\"Backstamp on the reverse of the photograph\" width=\"450\" height=\"595\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hibbittbarnes.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/John-Hellyer-Reverse.jpg 450w, https:\/\/www.hibbittbarnes.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/John-Hellyer-Reverse-378x500.jpg 378w, https:\/\/www.hibbittbarnes.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/John-Hellyer-Reverse-113x150.jpg 113w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 450px) 100vw, 450px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-4168\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Backstamp on the reverse of the photograph<\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Realising my photograph captured him during those years opened up a much larger story &#8211; one that connected my ancestor, not only to a ship and a crew, but to one of the most remarkable episodes in the history of <strong>Rapu Nui <\/strong>(otherwise known as <strong>Easter Island<\/strong>) and the <strong>British Museum<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">A Remarkable Photographic Archive<\/span><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Photographs from the voyage survive today in a very rare collection known as the <em><strong>Photographic Album of H.M.S. Topaze: South Pacific 1866\u201369<\/strong><\/em>, which can be explored online by <a title=\"clicking here\" href=\"https:\/\/repositoriodigital.bnp.gob.pe\/bnp\/recursos\/2\/html\/album-topaze\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>clicking here<\/strong><\/a>. Only two copies of the album are known to exist, and the one I\u2019ve used comes from the National Library of Peru. It contains original photographs taken during the ship\u2019s commission &#8211; images of the places the crew visited, from the Marquesas and Tahiti to Lima, Valpara\u00edso, Santiago and, most famously, Easter Island. Plymouth Sound.<\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Although the photograph of the ship in Plymouth Sound doesn\u2019t show the men at work, the original caption hints at the activity taking place on board as the ship prepared for her deployment.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Across The World To Chile<\/span><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">From these early scenes in Plymouth, <em>Topaze<\/em> began her commission on the <strong>Pacific Station<\/strong> &#8211; a posting that would take her thousands of miles from home. By late 1866 she had reached <strong>Valpara\u00edso, Chile,<\/strong> the headquarters of the station, and the album includes several photographs taken there. The crew came across a partially buried basalt statue at the ceremonial village of Orongo. This figure, later named <strong>Hoa Hakananai\u2018a <\/strong>(meaning lost or stolen friend), was unlike the larger tuff statues seen along the island\u2019s coast. It carried intricate petroglyphs and had deep cultural significance.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The crew excavated the statue, hauled it to the shore on a sledge, and brought it aboard ship on a raft. The statue, together with a second smaller one named <strong>Moai Hava<\/strong>, travelled with the ship. Hoa Hakananai\u2018a was presented to Queen Victoria, before being transferred to the <strong>British Museum<\/strong>. Its current location is in the <strong><a title=\"Wellcome Trust Gallery (Room 24: Living and Dying)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.britishmuseum.org\/collection\/galleries\/living-and-dying\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Wellcome Trust Gallery (Room 24: Living and Dying)<\/a><\/strong>. The statue is considered an ancestor, a being with spiritual presence, rather than an artwork. In recent years, <strong>Rapa Nui representatives have formally requested its return<\/strong>, describing the statue as a \u201cliving being\u201d taken without consent. Discussions between Rapa Nui authorities and the British Museum are ongoing.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Closing Reflections<\/span><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Researching John Hellyer\u2019s story has reminded me how family history often unfolds in unexpected ways. A single photograph led me from a name in a service record, to a voyage to the Pacific, to an album preserved on the other side of the world and to a moment that still resonates deeply with the people of Rapa Nui today.
